Panda Neon

Yesterday I wandered around Central and Sheung Wan.  What?  Did I get lost?
No.  You have to have a destination in mind in order to get lost.  Technically, I did not get lost.
So here I am, wandering around, soaking in the city, turning when I want to, exploring the way I like to, nice and slow.

In the distance I see this sign on a store a block away, and I felt I MUST investigate.

A neon panda?

Little Lamma Love

Welcome to Lamma Graf

Graffiti greeting

I’m starting to get a handle on Lamma.  It’s a fresh breath of (clean) air compared to Hong Kong across the bay.  Quiet, laid back, beautiful… it’s got something for everyone.  The people who I’ve been introduced to are wonderful, they are smart, kind and hilarious.

There are no vehicles here (just emergency ones and these little motor carts that cart goods around.  Many people bike.

Love the water?

Even on cloudy days, this island is still beautiful.

Q and A: What do you wear?

Every now and then I’m going to gather up a list of questions that I get either through my trusty “Contact Nicole” page, comments on posts, or through emails from home.

Starting today:

Q: What kind of sweet shoes do you wear out and about?

A: These sweet embroidered flats that my fella got for me.

BalletFlats

OK, OK, that wasn’t a real question from a real person.  I’m just giving you a sample of what could be.  (That, and I wanted to show you all my cute new kicks.)

You get where I’m going here?  You want to know something?  Let me know and I’ll do my best to fill you in!

I like eggs

A few of you might remember that I raved about the eggs in Dominica.  Yes, they came from those crazy hens that I complained about pooping everywhere and I despised their buddy, Rooster, who woke me up every dang morning at 4 am.    Irritating as they were, those ladies made some awesome eggs.

It’s no secret that I love eggs.

I haven’t really come across an egg preparation that I didn’t like.
Wait, I take that back.  I don’t like when scrambled eggs get spongy-crusty.   Hmm, they aren’t supposed to get like that.  Let’s carry on, I like all eggs that I’ve eaten (thus far) when cooked correctly.

Cheese and Rice, the eggs here are amazing!  Fresh farm eggs, 8 eggs for $10 HK ($1.30 USD)… does it get better than this?!  Golden yolks, thick & tough shells, the eggs exactly as they are supposed to be.  Added bonus?  None of my neighbors have Roosters… or chickens that I’ve seen for that matter.

They are so dang pretty.  Pretty delicious.  Plus, I keep getting double yolks.  I’m not sure what that means, but I’m going to say it’s good luck.

Brown Eggs

Aren't they so colorful?

I love cracking eggs.  This is not a metaphor.

**Edit:  I guess these eggs might not be farm fresh.  They may in fact come from mainland China.  But still tasty.  And cheap as whaaaa!

Welcome to Lamma Island

After 72 hours of travel, and another late plane, I’ve arrived on Lamma Island.  Sorry for the delay, I could have written all day, but I just turned my computer on.

No surprise to anyone, but I blew the fuses to the apartment within 10 minutes of being left alone in the apartment. Of course.  So, that giant iPod/radio/alarm clock that I lugged across the world is now fried.

I’ve got a tad bit of the jet lag, so I’m going to nap and come back when my head doesn’t feel like it’s spun off.

For now, enjoy this lovely picture of our beach.  I can see this from our apartment.

Jellyfish Lake

Right now I’m probably in the airplane after my giant layover (from the stinkin’ delayed flight) on the way to Hong Kong.

There is a list of things I might be doing on the plane, including but not limited to:

  • Reading Bossypants by Tina Fey
  • Snoozing
  • Getting really dehydrated
  • Listening to The Descendants soundtrack
  • Sitting still
  • Being scared of airplane restrooms
  • Wishing I could fly first class
So, as you can see, I currently don’t have very much going on.

I’m not sure when I’ll get time to get a meaningful post but here’s a video that you might enjoy.  I recommend making this full screen.

Rice Park in St.Paul, Minnesota

My flight got delayed.  I’ve been in Chicago since Monday at 7:30am.  The plane had some issues with the navigation system and by the time they got it fixed we passengers had been on the plane longer than the allowed 3 hours, and the in flight crew would have been illegally over on their hours.  So here I am.

I hear that Minnesota is getting a really decent size snowstorm today.  If that’s the case and the roads are safe tomorrow, I suggest popping on your favorite pair of boots and heading down across the river to good ol’ Saint Paul.  Rice Park is really beautifully lit up, or it was last time I was there a few weeks ago.  Get ready to see this really romantic scene!  (Sorry for the phone camera quality.)

Just like a fairy tale.

Packing Procrastination

I’m a procrastinator.  Which is weird, because I’m a planner as well.  I like planned & calculated pressure.  I do not like to be rushed until I have to.  I can feel that pressure looming over me and it’s not quite given me the last minute, “Holy-Moley-what-am-I-doing-I-have-to-run-around-like-a-wild-maniac” push yet.

The last time I packed up to leave the country was to go the to Peace Corps where I ended up with a bunch o’crap laid out on my parent’s floor just mere hours before taking off.  I’m determined to not let that be the case this time.  I’ve started putting together the things I need so I don’t end up making un-wise packing decisions.  It’s not going well.

If anyone has packing advice, I sure could use it.  Right now, I have a pack of gym socks, ukulele and book light.

Cake faces

According to my pals, this is my face, cake style. Pretty spot on!
